November 15th 2008

November is the month dedicated to praying for those who have died, so that's what we focused on for our meeting this month. After an exciting and fast-paced game of Soul Run, we heard about sin, purgatory and praying for the dead, then headed off to the cemetary to put what we had learned into practice by praying for the souls of all those buried there - those we know and those we don't. Returned to the hall, three Daughters prepared hot chocolate - delicious! and cookies for our snack, and a few more games rounded off the afternoon.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen

October Meeting - Elections!

On October 15th 2008, we had the first ever Elections for the Daughters of St. Joseph executive. Congratulations to all! We look forward to a great year.
Father Victor came and shared some words of wisdom with the Daughters, and we began making preparations for the All Hallows' Eve Party.

Stay tuned for more pictures!

September Meeting

September 29th is the Feast of the Canadian Martyrs in Canada. These brave men gave their live to bring the Catholic Faith to the New World. They are an example to us - we see in them that no matter what, we should not be afraid to stand up for our Faith. After hearing a talk about these martyrs, the Daughters showed, with skits, ways that they can remain strong in the Faith in different circumstances. The skits were great! Father Victor watched some of the skits with us, and stayed afterwards to hear confessions.

July 2008

This month, the meeting was about Jesus, Our Eucharistic King. We heard about the importance of Eucharistic Adoration, and about Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. The Blessed Sacrament Game, the video "First Communion" and Eucharistic Apostles cheers help round out the evening.

For our outing this month, we went to L'Arche Cape Breton in Wycocomagh (and for ice cream!)

Sorry...no pictures this month. The camera took a trip to Australia with Sister Bernadette for World Youth Day!

June 2008 Meeting - The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
We remembered Jesus' great love for us all by writing a poem and song about the Sacred Heart, and by holding a special prayer service in honor of the Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

May 31st 2008 - Trip to Our Lady of Grace Monastery

The Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Mary found the Daughters on their way to visit Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Monastery, NS. We prayed in the church, lit candles for all our prayer intentions, visited with the Sisters at the monastery, walked to the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace and the Holy Spring, played games, met some four-legged friends and enjoyed a delicious lunch of barbequed hamburgers. A great time was had by all!

May Meeting

The topic for this month was "The Power of the Holy Rosary" - talks, videos and activities helped us to learn more about this beautiful - and powerful - prayer. We ended the evening by praying the Rosary, using reflections the Daughters wrote to help us meditate on the mysteries. They were beautiful!

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

April 2008

We had a great month in April, starting off with going to Antigonish to see "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" at the movie theatre. Long live killer cheese curls!!!!! Great time... thank you to all our wonderful parents who helped drive and everyone who helped make this possible. The pizza was wonderful as well:) Father Victor received our new members at Sunday morning Mass to the great joy of all, and as usual, the meeting was fun and we all learned a lot. Cheerio!

March 6, 2008 - DSJ Skating!

It was a great outing! Thanks to all who helped us and thank you to the arena who let us skate there! Also we had a great turnout for singing for the senior citizens at Heritage House on March 29th. Thank you to all the Daughters of St. Joseph!

March Gathering!!

After an intense game of hide and go seek... we dug into our monthly topic: The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! Jesus is TRULY present in the Holy Eucharist after the Consecration at Mass, when the Priest pronounces those sacred words, "This is My Body.... This is My Blood". Weekly Sunday (or Sat. vigil) Mass is our sacred obligation as Catholic Christians. Snacks were... interesting...:) And then some dramatic presentations showed that the girls truly understood what happens at the Holy Sacrifice. We're all looking forward to skating this Thursday!!! See you then!

Thurs. Feb. 21 - Fundraiser Dinner, Play and Games

This fundraiser organized by the Daughters of St. Joseph, was to raise money to help the youth from our area that are traveling to World Youth Day and doing mission work in Fiji this summer. It was a beautiful evening, that all the family could enjoy and DID enjoy! Beyond the financial help to the WYD youth, it was an event that brought families together in a fun, community-oriented way and great opportunity for the girls to develop their wonderful dramatic talent. Congratulations, Daughters of St. Joseph! The Play: The Princess and the Apple, written by Sister Mary Catherine, in play that teaches a lesson about the True Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist in an allegorical way .... see the pictures for a little synopsis through the captions!

The girls had an exciting Eucharistic challenge and participated in some fantastic skits on the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, which demonstrated their great acting ability! We were so pleased to have 4 new members enrolled by Father R.D. Smith of Sydney (our Pastor was absent at the time). Congratulations, girls! St. Joseph will be looking out for you always.... The news of the Daughters' February project was announced... a Spaghetti Dinner and Play to raise money for World Youth Day and the Fiji Missions.... how EXCITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait!!!!!

Skiing & Prayer for Boys in Red

Our Moms organized a fabulous outing for the group cross-country skiing, ending with a delicious spaghetti dinner topped by home-made cake. It was DE-LICIOUS!!! Thank you, MOMS!!!!!! Also, the Daughters made a beautiful card for the Coach of the Bathurst Basketball team and each girl wrote what prayers they were going to offer for the repose of the souls of the boys and the Coach's wife and for the comfort of the families. The Sisters stopped in Mabou and lit candles for them at Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine. May they rest in peace. One of the Spiritual works of mercy is to "pray for the living and the dead."

January Gathering

January was another historic moment because it saw the official reception of our first 9 members!! Besides being historic, it was fun - the Confession run got our blood going, some crazy dramas and the Beatified Bird Challenge had us all on the alert to practice virtue to gain feathers for our birds. By the end of the afternoon, rest assured all these birds had a nice warm array of multi-coloured warmth! Father R.D. Smith from Sydney, who was filling in for Father Victor while he is in Nigeria, conducted the ceremony of reception of the 9 official members and also gave a great talk on the Sacrament of Confession. Before Mass we headed over the Church early for some private reflection and prayer time, as well as for Confession. Many Daughters joined Sister Mary Augustine and Sister Bernadette in the choir for the 4:00 pm and it was beautiful! Congrats, girls!

December Baking and Caroling

The girls and Moms were gung-ho for our December work of mercy. We worked together to bake Christmas goodies and make cards for elderly, shut-ins, and other members of our community. Delivery day was fun and also touching as the girls went from house to house with their lovely carols and goodies. Thank you especially to the MOMS who made this all possible! We ended at the Convent where the girls made themselves busy making soup and grilled cheese. I was impressed!!!!

December Bowling Night!!

Hmmmmmm what could we do for our "fun outing" for December...... funny... a few people we asked all said "bowling" so it was a "shoe"-in! (no pun intended). We grew from 7 to about 20 and all enjoyed ourselves immensely! Each team had their Patron Saint and there were awards for team spirit and Christian conduct... pizza at the end and... well.. when is our next outing? There are about 180 pics here, lol, so browse and enjoy at will! (That is what happens when you give free reign to 20 girls to take as many pics as desired on the digital camera:)

Historic 1st Meeting !

After some hack advertising and lots of prayers, our first ever meeting of the Daughters of St. Joseph was held on the first Saturday in December, 1-5 pm, 2007. The 7 who came out can rightly be called our founding members!! May God bless them for being the very first of their friends to get involved!!
